Dr. David Buehler’s career in wildlife science has been focused on education, research and outreach. He is passionate about teaching undergraduate and graduate students about all things related to wild birds and about the basics of wildlife management and conservation science. He is also passionate about wildlife science with research focused on understanding avian population dynamics and designing creative solutions to conserve species that are of conservation concern. Check out his research page for more details of ongoing projects. He is also actively engaged in conservation through the activities of The Wildlife Society and various bird conservation groups, such as the Golden-winged Warbler Working Group. Through all of these activities, Dr. Buehler is striving to promote the goal of wildlife conservation in a world where there are increasing demands on our natural resources and fewer places where wildlife can thrive.
My research interests are focused on understanding factors that limit wildlife populations, especially for avian species that are declining and thus in need of management. I develop spatially-explicit wildlife habitat models in geographic information systems as a means to evaluate landscape-scale management relationships. I am also interested in monitoring and managing for biological diversity. Most of my research is conducted with MS and PhD level graduate students at the University of Tennessee. Contact myself or my students listed below for more information on a given project.

My teaching philosophy has developed based on thousands of hours in the classroom as a student and as a teacher. I recognize that teaching provides a wonderful opportunity for faculty to influence student’s lives. The goal in my teaching program is to positively influence my students to better prepare them for both professional and personal challenges in life. My vision is to graduate students that are technically competent, creative problem-solvers, good communicators, and passionate about their careers and their lives.
